We’re starting a new weekly feature on The Palette that will be a Q+A with some of our amazing stockists!

First up: Patty Seaman of Paint Passion in Red Bank, NJ. Patty was one of our founding US stockists. In her words, “I went for it and never looked back!”

When did you first use Chalk Paint®?

As a huge fan of DIY wall and furniture finishes, I have read multiple books on decorative painting and interior design over the years. I first came across Chalk Paint® while reading Annie Sloan’s Creating the French Look and was blown away by a particular section: Annie was painting a mahogany dining table using only a grey paint. She did not strip, sand or prime the piece. I could not believe it! At that moment, I knew I had to find out more about this incredible Chalk Paint®.

I ended up emailing Annie and she put me in touch with our distributor, Lisa Rickert, and the rest is history! I’m proud to be one of the three founding US Stockists (along with Virginia Weathersby and Barb Skivington). I went for it and never looked back.

What is your favorite thing about Chalk Paint®?

I love how easy Chalk Paint® is to apply. No sanding, stripping or priming is necessary. What could be easier than that? Chalk Paint® is durable, and yet very forgiving. Previously waxed or varnished surfaces are not a problem. Chalk Paint® can handle it. It is eco-friendly, water-based, extremely versatile, and adheres to almost anything.

What is your favorite Chalk Paint® project that you’ve worked on?

One of my favorite Chalk Paint® projects has been my mother’s mahogany china cabinet. I used Aubusson Blue with a custom mix of Aubusson and Versailles inside as a pop of color.  I then applied French Gilding Wax and decorative Efex™ appliqués around the crown’s perimeter.

I also greatly enjoyed my recent fundraiser design project for Habitat for Humanity. I painted the piece in French Linen, adding gilding detail and a Royal Design Stencil on top.

Favorite color of Chalk Paint®?

That’s a tough one! If I had to choose, I would pick Duck Egg Blue. It has a built-in richness and patina. I love the versatility of the color.

Tell us a little about your shop.

My retail experience selling Chalk Paint® began as an online stockist in June 2010 on my website: www.bestfurniturepaint.com.

Paint Passion, my retail store, opened its doors in August 2014. Paint Passion is located in the heart of downtown Red Bank, New Jersey.

While our primary focus is all things Chalk Paint®, we also carry a number of paint and wax brushes, decorative finishing products, stencils, books and more. In addition to the retail side of the business, I teach Chalk Paint® workshops from beginner to advanced levels.  Depending on the workshop’s theme, we paint a variety of finishes and surfaces using Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint® and Annie Sloan Soft Waxes.

Be sure to check out Paint Passion across the web!

I notice the outside of your shop looks as if it is painted with Annie Sloan paint. How does that work? Do you have to put a preservative over it? How does it wear? Thank you.
